NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has named four new artists-in-residence to respond to social issues facing the city through art projects developed in conjunction with city agencies.
The city Department of Cultural Affairs chose the four artists, who will receive $40,000 to create art in their respective mediums with both city agencies and correctional populations. The New York Times reports performance artist Ebony Golden will work with the Office to Combat Domestic Violence and visual artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh will work with the NYC Commission on Human Rights to create art that combats discrimination.
Sculptor Onyedika Chuke will work with Rikers Island inmates and architect Rachel Barnard will work with people under probation.
This year's class will spend three months researching and working with their communities to inform their projects.
