Roger Federer vs Tomas Berdych: Australian Open tie takes place this morning

Federer and Berdych will clash today, aiming to make the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The withdrawal of Rafael Nadal yesterday has added extra intrigue to the match, with Federer now the firm favourite to win the competition for a stunning sixth time.

Berdych has made a habit of beating Federer on the big stage before but history suggests he may have his work cut out.

Because the 36-year-old has reached more Grand Slam semi-finals than any other player in the sport.

Roger Federer has reached the last four of a major tournament on a huge 42 occasions.

That is 11 more than second-placed Jimmy Connors and Novak Djokovic.

Out of those, he has only lost 13, going on to reach an astonishing 29 finals.

And those who follow Federer closely know he has won 19 of those, sitting three triumphs clear of Rafael Nadal and five ahead of Pete Sampras.

Meanwhile, speaking on Monday, Berdych admitted he was hoping to cause a huge upset Down Under.

“Well, of course I notice, but to be honest, if there is any plan or any key to success, then I would like to know that,” he said.

“I’m definitely going to go out there, try my best, try to play good tennis, and believe myself that I can do it.

“I did it in the past, and also, I did it at the Slams, so I know how it is to beat him for the best-of-five sets.

“But obviously it’s extremely tough opponent, and, yeah, just to go out there and swing some balls.”
