Oscars nominations: James Franco and Wonder Woman among major snubs

Updated January 24, 2018 10:29:37

It wouldn't be a proper list of Oscars nominations without a few unexpected and controversial nods.

Here's who missed out this year, and who will have an extra spring in their step.

Snub: Wonder Woman misses out for best director, best picture

The Warner Bros hit starring Gal Gadot was one of the biggest box office hits of 2017, and earned some $825 million globally.

It was the first stand-alone film for a female superhero since 2005 and was also directed by Patty Jenkins — the highest-grossing female director in Hollywood.

But it didn't receive rave reviews, and it appears the Academy didn't think it Oscar-worthy either.

Jenkins was left off the nominees list for best director, and the film also failed to make the race for best picture despite nods for other movies about women and made by women.

But the Academy does traditionally favour smaller art-house films over big action and superhero movies.

Since 1990, only the 2003 fantasy epic Lord of the Rings; The Return of the Kings snapped that trend to win the top Oscar honour.

Sci-fi movie Avatar, which is still the biggest box office movie of all time, received a best picture nomination in 2010 but lost out to The Hurt Locker.

Surprise: Get Out snags four nominations

Jordan Peele's film about an African-American man who finds himself trapped at his white girlfriend's house with her strange family received a handful of nominations this year.

The film has been nominated for best picture, star Daniel Kaluuya picked up a nod for best actor, and Peele received nods for both best director and best screenplay.

The $5 million horror movie from Universal Pictures earned more than $250 million globally and became a talking point around modern day race relations in America.

"I think that there's a piece of the black experience that is communicated in the film and through Daniel's performance that people of colour recognise and haven't seen and that people not of colour needed to see as well," Peele told Reuters.

Snub: James Franco snubbed for best actor

Franco won best actor at the Golden Globes this year for his film The Disaster Artist, which has been recognised as one of the best films of 2017.

But immediately after accepting the award, he was accused of sexual misconduct by a former actress girlfriend.

Franco has denied the allegations, but it was enough to see him left off the list for best actor at the Oscars.

He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award on Monday, but lost to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour.

Surprise: Christopher Plummer nominated after replacing Kevin Spacey

It was rumoured to be a possibility, but did we expect it would happen?

The veteran actor has been nominated for best supporting actor after replacing Spacey in Sony Pictures' kidnapping film, All the Money in the World.

Plummer was asked to join the film just one month before its release, after Spacey was axed for being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple men.

"Everything has happened so quickly of late that I am still a trifled stunned but excited by it all," Plummer said.

Snub: German film fails to get nod for best foreign film

In The Fade, directed by Fatih Akin, won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film earlier this month and received praise for its lead star, Diane Kruger.

But today? No dice.

Surprise: Phantom Thread nominated for best picture

This was a deserved, but unexpected addition to the nominees list for best picture.

The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a renowned dressmaker in the 1950s and was described by the Los Angeles Times as "one of the best pictures of the year".

But it was only released nationwide in the US last week, and it wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award, or a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award (BAFTA).

In total, it picked up six nominations, including: best director, best actor and best supporting actress.
