Your letters: No thanks to helping Toronto host World Cup games

World Cup would be more than just a party, Jan. 23

Columnist Edward Keenan wants Toronto to host some games of the World Cup. To enable Toronto, he wants the rest of Canada and the rest of Ontario to fund it, as Toronto’s share would be a mere $10 million and these things always run to huge extra costs.

The trouble is that only the rich, the politicians of Ottawa and Queen’s Park, and Toronto hotel owners will benefit, while the rest of us, who are too far away to attend the games, will merely pay for most of it.

No thanks, Mayor John Tory. Toronto may have a large percentage of federal and provincial votes, and you may threaten changes at the next election if the money is not promised, but bread and circuses have a way of proving useless.

The columnist hints at building toward future extravaganzas, like the Olympics for example. No thanks again. These things never pay for themselves.
