Mirakle Bradley poured in a game-high 21 points to lead Lubbock Monterey to a 69-57 victory over Cooper in a District 4-5A girls basketball game Tuesday at Cougar Gym.
Sydni Wagoner followed with 15 points, and Maddie Stephens added 13 as the Lady Plainsmen (18-11 overall, 3-3 district) remained tied with Lubbock Coronado for third place. Coronado (9-21, 3-3) beat San Angelo Lake View 45-27 on Tuesday. Coronado plays at Monterey on Friday.
Cheyenne Sherwood led Cooper with 12 points, and T’Kiya Smith had 11 for the Lady Cougars (12-18, 2-4), who had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell into sole possession of fifth place.
Monterey, which swept Cooper 2-0 in district play this season, scored the game’s first 11 points and never trailed. The Lady Plainsmen led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Cooper outscored them 48-46 the rest of the way.
The Lady Coogs, who trailed 37-27 at halftime, outscored Monterey 11-2 to start the third quarter and got as close as one (46-45) on Sherwood’s 3-point goal with 53 seconds left in the third quarter. It was her second in a 8-0 Cooper run.
However, Monterey answered with a 10-0 run for a 56-45 lead with 5:49 left in the game and held on for the victory.
Cooper plays at No. 16 Lubbock Cooper (27-2, 6-0) on Friday. Lubbock Cooper beat Lubbock High (13-14, 4-2) 62-37 to take a two-game lead over the second-place Lady Westerners.
