A sports centre has launched a new campaign in a bid to ensure people keep their New Year fitness resolutions.

1610, which has a centre in Dorchester, is launching a new campaign in the South West during January called Appy New Year which will help people navigate their way around fitness technology and get the most from what the latest fitness apps have to offer.

A series of free workshops are being organised at 1610 centres throughout January to advise members on the do’s and don’ts of using apps.

The workshops will guide users about a number of apps, including the 1610 mobile app, the Technogym MyWellness app, FitBIts and the Apple Watch.

Advice will be given about how to understand the data involved, such as activity levels and intensity, type of suitable training and biometric parameters.

1610 marketing executive, Paul Stimpson who is organising the campaign says that the fitness technology market is a fast-moving industry which can cause confusion for those trying to make sense of the information available to them.

He said: “It can be confusing for people trying to keep up with the latest developments and they need to be able to fully understand their health data and information from a FitBit or fitness app. If they don’t it can actually leave them worse off, as some people believe they’re doing more activity and burning more calories and they can eat more than they should.

"We wanted to deliver a campaign that supports and educates our members about their health data so they don’t make mistakes, become frustrated and give up on their fitness programmes.”

1610 wellness coach Vicky Stanners teaches and advises 1610 customers on a wide range of health issues and fitness, she says its essential that gym users do their research on fitness apps available so they can exercise to their full potential.

She said: "Fitness apps and smart watches are amazing tools, I use mine to help push myself and keep improving, I use it to see how many calories I am burning compared to what I am taking in and keeping an eye on my heart rate while I am exercising. The best thing about it all, I can assess this information all one place and compare it to previous results, without having to jump from one app to another. 1610 staff can help guide people through the range of data, aiding their fitness journey and helping them to track their progress.”

A free workshop will be held at Dorchester Sports Centre on Saturday, January 27.
