The BJP on Tuesday welcomed the order of the Supreme Court asking the Union Government to form a tribunal within a month’s time to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
“The State Government has opted for formation of tribunal only to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute. The BJP and the Union Government have never opposed the proposal. We have welcomed the Supreme Court’s order for the interest of people of Odisha,” said BJP State chief spokesperson Sajjan Sharma.
He said when an unitary tribunal would be formed, all tribunals formed earlier would be merged into it.
Samajward Party State president Rabi Behera hailed the Supreme Court order stating that the tribunal would certainly resolve the water dispute.
“The Samajwadi Party has been supported the State Government in seeking for a tribunal from very beginning. The Supreme Court’s order has exposed the Union Government’s negligence towards Odisha,” he said in a statement.
The Congress too welcomed the apex court order and demanded that the Chhattisgarh Government stop all barrage construction works upstream Mahanadi. “The Congress always welcomes Supreme Court’s direction. We want Odisha people get justice at the earliest,” said party State spokesperson Sougat Mohanty.
