Fair-minded Pennsylvanians are surely cheering the stunning ruling of the state Supreme Court, striking down the extreme partisanship evidenced in gerrymandered congressional districts, action which has enabled the tyranny of the minority to stomp on the electorate.
Both parties have sought to maximize their influence in this insidious way throughout Pennsylvania history and it is time for it to end. The court’s position is stern, ordering a General Assembly-led redrawing of the map within two weeks and warning of court action to enact the fix if legislation is not forthcoming by that time.
Naturally, those who currently benefit from the scheme are crying foul, with GOP state senators Joe Scarnati and Jake Corman immediately decrying the court for alleged partisanship and a usurpation of their legislative authority.
Commonwealth voters placed the state Supreme Court in the hands of a 5-2 Democratic majority. As Republicans have said to us a great deal lately, elections have consequences.
