Spencer considers ways to improve David Prouty High

SPENCER - The Board of Selectmen heard action steps toward improving David Prouty High School from interim Superintendent Jodi Bourassa and school business administrator Gary Suter at Monday night's meeting.

The continuous conversation included priorities such as basic changes in the curriculum, ways to enhance literacy skills and expanding the use of technology.

The need for a new high school and increased enrollment was also of deep concern for the board.

"We need to improve the building for learning to happen," said Ms. Bourassa. "It is structurally sound but needs a complete overhaul."

Ms. Bourassa also outlined the need for a transparent and inclusive budget process, implementing energy efficiency.

In the next two years, the plan is to create a timeline and funding for the deteriorating science labs, align the curriculum with Knox Trail Middle School, and engage families on a more user-friendly school website.

"Having stability in the district is very important," said Selectman Ralph Hicks. "Communication between both communities (Spencer and East Brookfield) is paramount."

Mr. Suter also outlined a five-year target plan that included efforts to increase enrollment, completely remodel the entire facility, and continue to use technology to engage students and families.

"Hopefully we are headed in the right direction," said Mr. Hicks.

In addition, Town Clerk Laura Torti swore in the town's first full-time firefighters. Joshua Blodgett, Patrick Gorham, Thomas Parsons and David Hoyt were introduced by Fire Chief Robert Parsons.

"This wouldn't have happened without the work of the fire chief," said Selectman Tony Pepe, chairman of the Board of Selectmen. "This is a big moment for the town."
