ELBING — The top four seeds held in the opening round of the 51st annual Eli J. Walter Invitational girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday in Elbing.
Host and top-seeded Berean Academy downed Douglass 42-25, Wichita Trinity Academy downed Hutchinson Central Christian 45-36, second-seeded Halstead downed Burrton 63-26 and Goessel downed Minneapolis 56-44.
Berean led Douglass 12-9 after the first quarter and 18-16 at the half. A 13-2 third quarter gave the Warriors the breathing room needed to claim the win.
Ashtyn Wiebe led 10-1 Berean with 13 points. Brooke Wiebe added 12 points.
Greely Munroe scored 10 points for Douglass, 2-9.
Halstead jumped out to a 28-4 lead against Burrton in the first quarter and led 41-9 at the half.
Halstead, 10-1, was led by Daphne Williams with 17, Karenna Gerber with 16 and Madi McClain with 15.
Amairani Salgado scored nine points for 2-8 Burrton, hitting nine of 10 from the free throw line.
Goessel used a 19-9 second quarter to lead Minneapolis 28-14 at the half.
Eden Hiebert led 9-2 Goessel with 23 points. Brittney Hiebert added 12 points.
Minneapolis, 2-8, was led by Fayeth Konneck with 19 points and Kersti Nelson with 10.
Wichita Trinity Academy trailed Central Christian 21-18 at the half, but tied the game 27-27 after three quarters and outscored Central 18-9 in the fourth.
Alex Bearup led Trinity, 7-3, with 13 points. Austin Broadie added 12.
Lindsey Kauffman and Krysten Bartlett each scored nine points for Central Christian, 5-5.
In the consolation semifinals Thursday in the junior high gym, Douglass will face Central Christian at 6 p.m., followed by Burrton and Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m.
In Thursday’s semifinals, Berean Academy will take on Wichita Trinity Academy ay 6 p.m., followed by Halstead and Goessel at 7:30 p.m.
