AUBURNDALE — McKeel Academy used good ball movement and a balanced offensive attack to defeat Mulberry, 8-0, Tuesday night at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in the Class 2A, District 10 girls soccer semifinals.
The Wildcats got goals from four different players and assists from four others to advance to Friday night’s district championship game against Fort Meade, a 1-0 winner over Frostproof.
Both McKeel and Fort Meade will advance to the regional playoff.
“That (the regional playoffs) is really our big focus,” McKeel coach Jacob Sweeney said. “We do want a district championship, that’s always a great thing, but our goal every year is, can we get into regionals, can we beat one of those teams out of Tampa and advance into the Sweet 16, the Elite Eight, maybe even into the state semis?”
Asha Zuniga has three goals Tuesday night for the Wildcats (19-5-3), while Kaylee Couey and Madison Dod had two each and Jenna Aponte had one. Raquel “BooBoo” Jones had two assists on corner kicks, Lavonja Knight had two assists and Makayla Peddycoart and Kaitlyn Susarcheck each had one assist.
“That’s been one of our strengths this year, the ball movement,” Sweeney said. “We have a lot of (offensive) choices. We know that any one of them can put the ball isn’t even goal.”
Couey started the scoring with a goal in the first two minutes, and Zuniga scored the next three to give the Wildcats a 4-0 halftime lead.
They ended the game with four more goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half, two by Dodd and one each by Couey and Aponte.
Mulberry, which had just one senior, closes out the season with an 11-9-1 record.
“Overall, we had a stellar season,” Mulberry coach Adam Lile said. “We’re in a growing stage. We only had one senior so to perform the way we did over the whole season, I’m very proud of our girls.
“I’m looking forward to to the future of our team because I can see what’s coming,” Lile said.
