City, Residents Still Shoveling 14 Inches Of Snow In Yankton

Julie Dunmire reports:

Yankton, SD

Sioux Falls saw its fair share of snow, but Yankton was one of the hardest hit places this week.

Schools and businesses are back open, but many of them are still digging out.  It's a two-person job.

"People don't ask for help, when they need help. Pride gets in the way," Staci Hoebelheinrich said.

Hoelbelheinrich doesn't wait for an invitation. She just shows up with her shovel.

"Yesterday, four people...today, this is my second one," Hoebelheinrich said.

That's six driveways, buried under 14 inches of snow.

"I don't know how long I've been here; I didn't look at the clock," Hoelbelheinrich said.

"Right now, we're just kind of finishing up.  Most of the snow we got came yesterday afternoon," Yankton Department of Public Works Manager Corey Potts said.

With this much snow, clearing the roads is a two-day job.

"We started at two in the afternoon yesterday and quit at three last night. Then we started back up again this morning at seven," Corey Potts said.

There's so much snow on the streets, you can't just plow it.  Yankton Department of Public Works is taking dump truck after dump truck of snow and dropping it off here.

"It's a lot of snow. Lots of snow," Hoelbelheinrich said.

A lot of snow-- that Hoelbelheinrich moves one shovel at a time.

"There's a lot of people that live by themselves, and don't have the money to get a plow," Hoelbelheinrich said.

She says it's more than just clearing people's driveways.

"It's a good deed. It's good for the heart," Hoelbelheinrich said.

It's neighbor helping neighbor, without needing to ask.

The Yankton Department of Public Works says it expects most of the snow removal to be done by the end of the week.
