The Patriots’ players had Tuesday off, which allowed them to deal with personal issues like tickets and lodging arrangements for family and friends prior to Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis.
Not so for the coaching staff.
It was “very much of a working day,” coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday in a conference call as “we just don’t know very much about Philadelphia.”
The Patriots last played the Eagles in 2015, dropping a 35-28 decision at Gillette Stadium.
“They’re obviously an outstanding team and we have a lot of work to do,” Belichick said of the NFC champions. “We have a lot of ground that we need to cover, so we’re at it hard trying to catch up so when we bring the players in [Wednesday] we’ll be ready for them and we can do a good job of presenting the information to them efficiently and accurately because, again, there’s a lot of information to digest.”
Belichick and his staff needed to sort through all 18 games the Eagles have played this season, which encompassed some 2,500 plays when you total offense, defense and special teams. The objective was to whittle it down to about 160 plays to focus on because the Eagles can’t do everything they’ve done all year in one game and to avoid sensory overload on their players.
“We have to be prepared for a lot of things,” Belichick said, “but at the same time we can’t be overly distracted by things that either have a low percentage chance of coming up or probably wouldn’t be the type of thing they would do against us. We try to eliminate some of those and make sure we work on the things that we feel are most problematic or may be most likely to occur.”
Jaguars cry foul
The Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t pleased with the discrepancy in penalties following their 24-20 loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
The Jags had six accepted penalties (and a declined one) for 98 yards, the Patriots one for 10 yards.
“The stats speak for themselves,” Jaguars defensive lineman Malik Jackson said afterward.
The Jags were flagged for a false start, an illegal shift, delay of game — a killer coming out of a timeout that wiped out a 12-yard gain for a first down on third down — and unnecessary roughness. The only judgments calls were two for defensive pass interference, one of which was obvious and the other debatable
That gave the Jaguars 14 penalties in three playoff games (4.7 average) after finishing the regular season ranked 11th in the league with 112 in 16 games (7.0).
As for the Patriots, they ranked 26th with 95 penalties (5.9).
So, yes, the stats speak for themselves.
The Patriots had some serious issues when it came to playing with discipline through the first 13 games, getting flagged 87 times (6.7). But they’ve shown marked improvement in the past five games, totaling 13 penalties (2.6).
Pats to wear white in Super Bowl
The Patriots announced they’ll wear their white road jerseys in Super Bowl LII.
As the designated home team, they had the choice of selecting what color jerseys to wear. No surprise with the choice as they’re 3-0 during the Belichick/Tom Brady era when wearing white in the Super Bowl.
