No siyahnamahs to qazis for ceremonies post 9 p.m.: Waqf Board

Plans are afoot to conclude Muslim weddings by midnight as Telangana State Waqf Board (TSWB) will not give marriage booklets and ‘siyahnamas’ (also known as ‘nikahnamas’) to qazis performing nikah ceremonies after 9 p.m.

This decision was taken on Tuesday at a consultative meeting among a team of cops led by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. V. Srinivas Rao, TSWB chairman Mohammed Saleem, members of the Muslim clergy, including Mufti Khalil Ahmed from Jamia Nizamia.

Families disturbed

Seeking police cooperation, Mr. Saleem said late nights weddings disturb families as he pointed out recent instances in which youths used daggers and firearms as a part of festivities.

“The wedding halls should close on time. We will not give siyahnamah and marriage booklets to qazis if they perform nikah after 9 p.m.,” he said.

Mufti Khaleel Ahmed agreed and urged the police to be strict with wedding hall managements for flouting permissible time limit.

Frame guidelines

Touching upon the virtue of being on time, Mr. Rao said the police is willing to be of assistance if guidelines are framed taking into consideration the minutes of the meeting.

“The meeting was basically for self regulation. If this is done, it will reduce the burden on night policing,” he said.

In 2015, the South Zone police had sought a fatwa from Jamia Nizamia, seeking to know whether it could crack down on loud celebrations, which involve female dancers and firecrackers.
