They are said to have eloped together

A man and a woman, said to have eloped together, were found murdered in different places in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi on Tuesday in what is being suspected as a case of honour killing.

The body of Sharanappa Katti (28), a resident of Kumana Sirasagi village in Jewargi taluk, was found in the morning near the Yellamma temple on the outskirts of the village.

Early clue

The police received an early clue in the case when the body of Lakshmibai (24), a resident of Shahpur taluk in Yadgir district, was found in an isolated area near Vastari village in Jewargi taluk the same afternoon. The body was found burnt.

While the police managed to locate all the close relatives of Sharanappa and Lakshmibai, investigation revealed that they (Sharanappa and Lakshmibai) got to know each other during his [Sharanappa’s] visit to relatives in Darshanapur village in Shahpur taluk.

Lakshmibai left her husband’s house and was living with Sharanappa at Kumanasirasagi village for the last couple of years. Both were from different castes.

“At this stage, we do not know what exactly transpired between them,” Superintendent of Police N. Shashi Kumar said.

Honour killing?

It is suspected that they were killed by someone who was against their relationship, but the sequence of events leading to the murders was not yet clear, he added. The police have not come across any eyewitness in the case so far, but it is suspected to be a case of honour killing, Mr. Shashi Kumar added.
