A 57-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The identity of the deceased was not released pending notification of his family, FHP's Sgt. Kim Montes said.
Rescue workers were dispatched to what was initially reported as a motor vehicle accident with a vehicle submerged in water at 5:10 p.m. at Williams Road and Pioneer Trail.
Emergency workers arriving on scene reported that the crash included two vehicles but no vehicle was in the water.
The New Smyrna man was northbound on Williams Road in a Chevy Malibu behind another vehicle. The man was driving erratically and did not stop on approaching the vehicle ahead of him, a Buick Enclave, and struck it from behind, troopers said.
The Chevy Malibu then veered off the road and struck a tree. The driver of the Malibu was killed, Montes said.
The driver of the Buick Enclave, Sara Vanrider, 41, and her 12-year-old son, both of New Smyrna Beach, suffered minor injuries, Montes said.
The crash remains under investigation, Montes said.
