SARATOGA SPRINGS - A city woman who was allegedly under the influence of heroin when her car collided head-on with another vehicle is facing charges Monday under Leandra’s Law.

Wendy L. Cook, 47, was charged with felony aggravated DWI and misdemeanors operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal using drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, Saratoga Springs police said.

Cook and her 8-year-old son were traveling east on Geyser Road in a 2010 Chevrolet when Cook crossed over the center line and crashed into a 2000 Buick Century headed west on the road near Cady Hill Boulevard around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Cook’s child wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and suffered head and lower body injuries. He and his mother were taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, police said. Their condition wasn't known Monday night.

The driver of the Buick, a 49-year-old woman from Northville, suffered leg injuries and was taken to Albany Med and released later Saturday night, police said.

Officials said an investigation revealed that Cook was apparently under the influence of heroin, warranting the charge under Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs with a child under 16 in the vehicle. She was issued an appearance ticket and will appear in Saratoga Springs City Court at a late date.
