A Canandaigua man attempted to enter his burning home to rescue three family pets on Monday afternoon, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said firefighters from five Ontario County departments were called to 4299 State Route 21 in Canandaigua just after 4:40 p.m. While the residents were not home when the fire broke out, Keith J. Rose, 32, arrived at the scene just before emergency responders and attempted to get inside to rescue his family's pets.

A passing motorist spotted the flames and called 911.

Deputies said the house was fully engulfed in flames and that Rose was unable to enter the one-story home because of heavy fire conditions. He suffered from minor smoke inhalation, was treated at the scene and released.

Two dogs and one cat died in the house fire, deputies said. Authorities said the house is no longer livable.

Deputies said the house was a total loss, but was insured. Authorities are investigating to determine the cause but said it appeared that the fire started in a rear room of the home.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
