Prairie Township Friends of the Library
Prairie Township Friends of the Library, Holmesville, met Jan. 9 with seven members present.
It was noted the December Community Night went quite well. Approximately 38 children plus parents and volunteers enjoyed a craft, cut-out cookies to decorate (and eat), hot chocolate and a story teller, with Christmas carols playing in the background. Maple Spring School parents made the cookies. Santa appeared to visit the children and gave them gifts donated by Coveny Chiropractic.
The Volunteer Appreciation evening Jan. 17 was a dessert bar. Board members volunteered various desserts. The library provided drinks and all else needed.
Permission was requested to replace the bathroom door and lock; permission was gladly granted.
It was noted there are books that are overdue one year, many for two years. In an effort to get them returned, or at least to clear the records, reminders will be sent to overdue book holders. A sample Reminder Letter was passed around for approval.
The next meeting will be Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. All interested community persons are more than welcome to attend.
Marshallville Lions Club
Twelve members and two guests attended the January 18, 2018 meeting of Marshallville Lions Club held at the American Legion.
District Gov. Cindy Palmentera provided information regarding the state convention. Dues are going to increase slightly over the next three years. A scholarship will be provided to a high school student and the deadline for filing is March 1, 2018.
Guest Lexi Nolletti, a student at Wooster High School and member of the WHS speech and debate team, was the speaker. She is involved in the International Baccalaureate Program and plays piano, guitar and sings at her church. She hopes to attend medical school. Noletti is the granddaughter of Lions members Tom and Linda Guthrie of Orrville.
For her informative speaking program of the evening, she choose to provide information about Dr. Seuss and his publications. In the 1950s in the United States, it was noted that some students had limited interest in books and reading.
Dr. Seuss was born Ted Geisel in Springfield, Mass. on March 2, 1904 and died in California on Sept 24, 1991. He was employed as an American author, political cartoonist, poet, animator and book publisher. During World War II, he worked in the animation department of the U.S. Army and created posters for the Treasury Department.
Geisel wrote more than 60 children's books and was the ninth best selling author, selling more that 500 million copies of his books. He used several pen names and actively wrote from 1927-1990.
He was provided 348 words that first-graders needed to be able to recognize. Using 236 of those words, he wrote, "The Cat in the Hat." His style was to create verse rhythms, which children seemed to enjoy.
During the business meeting, it was discussed that toothbrushes will be provided to all students at the Smithville Elementary School in February, which is National Dental Health Month.
A Valentine party will be held on Feb. 15, 2018 in the Community Room at Buehler's in Orrville. Guests and prospective members are welcome to attend. Contact any Lion members of call 330-855-4901 for more information.
