Australian Open 2018: Kyle Edmund makes huge Rafael Nadal claim

RAFAEL NADAL will not be an intimidating opponent for Kyle Edmund at the Australian Open if they meet in the semi-finals on Thursday, the Brit claims.

Edmund booked his spot in the last four earlier today, winning his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final by beating Grigor Dimitrov in four sets.

The Brit appeared to contain his nerves, which he reckons are “normal” given the situation, and does not even appear to have any misgivings about facing world No 1 Nadal in the next round: the Spaniard faces Marin Cilic today for a place in the semis.

Edmund and Nadal’s only previous meeting on the clay of Monaco saw the 23-year-old lose the first set 6-0.

However, he fought back to win the second 7-5 to give him something to take forward into a potential meeting in Melbourne.

“Of course, it would be an amazing experience to play someone like [Nadal],” Edmund said.

“The good thing is I sort of had a good, close match against him in Monte-Carlo.

“That was a great experience for me there. Of course, yeah, I'll just take it in my stride.”

Edmund is already guaranteed to reach a career-high ranking of No 26 next week, jumping up from his current spot just inside the top 50.

But the British No 2, who could overtake the recovering Andy Murray in the standings if he reaches the final, has not ruled himself out of winning the whole thing in Australia, despite his relative inexperience.

“I’m 23 years old, my first Grand Slam semifinal. First time I played on one of the biggest courts in the world. To beat a quality of player like Grigor,” Edmund added.

“Of course, all these things I'm aware of. They're great feelings. You don't obviously play in the semifinals of a Grand Slam every day, or a quarters like today.

“So, yeah, I just try to enjoy it as much as possible, like I said. I knew I was in a good place. There's no reason why my tennis wasn't good enough to win. It's obviously about going out there and doing it.”
