Consider Trump’s impact on US economy

“Trump’s failed presidency” was the headline on Saturday’s editorial page in the Gazette. The majority of the editorial was devoted to how badly the editors thought President Donald Trump was treating other countries.

The real question should be, how is he treating his own country? There is record low unemployment (and that includes African-Americans and Hispanics), and a stock market that is through the roof (which increases the 401k retirement plans for the average worker).

Eversource, one of our local utility companies, will be reducing the cost on its product because of the tax policies of this administration. Can we expect the Gazette to reduce the cost of the paper because of the lower taxes it will be paying? I do not think so.

It should be noted that not one Democrat voted for the tax reduction plan. I guess they think that government has more right to our money than we do.

As for the hand-wringing over the treatment of other countries, how are these countries being treated by their leadership?

In 2010, Haiti was hit with a debilitating earthquake. As usual, the citizens of this country reached into their pockets and sent tens of millions of dollars through the Red Cross and other organizations to help with the relief. Any reports you see from the island show that people are still living in plastic tents.

Where did the money go? Does anybody care? We can be sure the leaders of Haiti don’t. I’m sure when the members of the editorial board of the Gazette and their families vacation in Haiti this summer, they will give us an update.
