Village upgrade with accent on farming
Jiuxingyuan Housing Estate finished projects under the Beautiful Countryside program last year.
Some of the construction has made residents nostalgic. Many of their ideas were incorporated into the project plans, including elements of bygone farm life.
“We were farmers before land acquisition and we worked this land,” said Wu Shujuan, a resident of Jiuxingyuan. “Farmland disappeared, and modern buildings have been built in its place, but farming is always in our hearts.”
The Beautiful Countryside program aims to gentrify rural areas and upgrade them with modern amenities.
Zhang Yiming, director of the owners’ committee that improved the construction plan, listened to what resident had to say and then checked back with locals periodically to ensure that their contributions were being followed accurately.
“I see the statue of a farmer cutting rice as soon as I enter the Jiuxingyuan, and it reminds me of the past,” said Wu.
There are four farm concept landscapes in the Jiuxingyuan, including wall paintings.
“This place isn’t big but we are quite content,” said one resident. “We like to get together and knit.”
Residents have also formed a volunteer patrol to do the rounds for security checks, reminding people to lock their doors.
“Though we are just farmers, we work shoulder to shoulder,” Wu said. “Everybody is enthusiastic and eager to do his bit.”
The patrol now has 60 residents, with many more coming to sign up.
“Because we listened to the opinions of residents, they have responded positively to their new surroundings,” Zhang said.
