Unborn baby's death triggers chaos

Locals assaulted an official of Islami Bank Medical College Hospital in Rajshahi city yesterday, following an allegation of negligence that reportedly led to the death of an unborn baby.

They also ransacked the chamber of the official, Mamunur Rashid, the hospital's deputy director, police quoted witnesses as saying.

The angry people left the scene after police had rushed to the spot around 12:00 noon.

Julia, 28, a pregnant woman, was admitted to the hospital around 2:00am on Sunday, said Zillur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shah Makhdum Police Station.

Julia had been left uncared for for eight hours, said her husband Nazmul Haque from the city's Shalbagan area.

No doctor was sent to provide service during the period, he said.

Doctors attended to her at 10:00am on that day but the baby was found dead in the womb, the police official quoted the family as saying.

At 5:00pm, the dead male baby was lifted out through a Caesarean section, he said.

OC Zillur said, during primary investigation, they found  that the hospital authorities delayed providing services to the woman. However, he quoted the authorities as saying that they could not serve the woman immediately after she had been admitted. When the correspondent tried to contact the hospital's deputy director, he did not open the door of his chamber. He even did not response to phone calls. Other officials available at the hospital declined to comment.
