Turnout tops 33 percent for 101 vote

Nearly 34 percent of Jackson County voters had turned in ballots as of Monday for Tuesday's special election on Measure 101. Voters have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to cast ballots.

Out of 146,200 eligible voters, 48,992 had returned ballots, or 33.5 percent, according to county Clerk Chris Walker.

"(That's) decent," Walker said. "This is a decent election for a single issue."

Measure 101 will decide the fate of a temporary tax passed last summer by the Oregon Legislature on some hospitals, insurance companies, managed care organizations and the Public Employees Benefit Board. Insurance companies would pay 1.5 percent on policies, and affected hospitals would pay 0.7 percent on net revenue. Rural hospitals would be exempt.

Statewide, 747,525 ballots had been returned by Monday, or 28.3 percent of the more than 2.6 million registered voters.
