Work on the much awaited 1,320-MW supercritical thermal power project (TPP) at Udangudi in Thoothukudi district, proposed with financial support from the Centre, will commence soon.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami will lay foundation for the project on January 29, P. Thangamani, State Electricity Minister, told presspersons here on Sunday.
The proposed 2 x 660 MW coal-based supercritical thermal power project will improve the power infrastructure of the State utility and its financial and operational performance, the Minister said, speaking at a function in Kumarapalayam recently.
The Minister said that the power equipment-maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won the order and its scope of work involved design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, commissioning and civil works for the entire plant.
The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), a public infrastructure finance company in India’s power sector, has come forward to provide a loan of ₹1 lakh crores to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to augment production by setting up new projects. A loan agreement was signed last May.
The REC recently sanctioned a loan of ₹10,000 crore for the first phase of Udangudi TPP, the Minister added.
