According to sources, Sainath (22) from Andhra Pradesh, who was doing his final year B Tech course at SRM University at Kattankulathur on the outskirts of Chennai, was staying in the institute's hostel in the campus.
It is said that he was chided by teachers for trying to cheat in the exam and for scoring low marks. Also, it is alleged that he was imposed fine for his poor performance. His parents too had scolded him over phone, sources said.
Sainath was dejected with all these developments and on Monday night, he jumped off from the third floor of the hostel building. He was immediately taken to a hospital nearby, where doctors declared him dead.
The Marimalai Nagar police, who reached the spot after receiving information from the college management, sent his body to Chengalpet government hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
