Local Golf: Bunker Links tees up comedy night

"Finally, there will be something at Bunker Links Golf Course to laugh at besides my golf game.

In what is certainly a first for the city's public course, fourth-year pro Brian Luedtke has organized an event billed as "Cupid Comedy Night" for Feb. 8 at the Bunker Links clubhouse.

For $20 per couple and a two-drink minimum, the cozy but upgraded clubhouse will provide the stage for laughs from Chicago comic Jay Harris. He was voted a finalist for Zaniest Comedian in Chicago in 2008.

Luedtke has become known for new events at Bunker since he arrived and while this may be his most different yet, he doesn't take all the credit.

"This comedian (Harris) has called me for the last couple of years and he'd been wanting to a show in the summer months." said Luedtke. "I didn't know how we could do a show in the summer when it stays light until 9 o'lock.

"But he called me again and and suggested a couple-themed show close to Valentine's Day.

"Comedians are basically booked on Friday and Saturday nights all year so I picked a Thursday. For 50 couples, I thought could get people who play out here and their significant others.

"I thought we'd give it a try."

He added, "I have been to a comedy event at a country club in the Chicago area, so I know it's been done."

Without much fanfare, the event is almost a sellout,  just a few tickets remain and must be purchased in advance. If you are over 21, contact the Bunker golf shop (344-1818) to make arrangements.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour and the show starts at 7 p.m. No food will be served.

"I have no doubt it will be a good show," said Luedtke. "It will last about 60-90 minutes and there's a lot of crowd involvement."

Also planned are give-aways and a raffle.

"It's something to do in the middle of the week, it's a couples event and it should be fun," said Luedtke.

If you're a golfer and you don't go, your next chance for a good laugh at Bunker might not come until after March 1, the official opening date for the course (weather permitting).

That's when you might see me out playing again.
