Fishers has set a June 1 goal for a reconstruction of its amphitheater and municipal lawn, which includes graded seating, a meeting pavilion and water jets.

The board of public works Monday approved a $4.2 million low bid contract to Meyer Construction Management of Fishers to upgrade the Nickel Plate Amphitheater and public green behind City Hall on 116th Street.

The rehab will include enlarging the stage, the dressing rooms and bathrooms to accommodate bigger acts. The stage will be 25 feet deeper and the sound and lighting capabilities will be improved.

The work will include construction of a 1,700-square foot pavilion halfway back on the lawn with public meeting rooms and bathrooms. Behind the pavilion will be a concrete platform with a 24-jet fountain, said city spokeswoman Ashley Elrod.

A parking area just west of the stage will also be revamped.

The Department of Public Works saidthe city wants to the project finished by June, which would require “a very aggressive construction schedule.”

The amphitheater hosts free concerts during the summer.
