Immigration that serves us, and that which undermines our system

What a wonderful story in the Jan. 15 Luminaries about Dr. Walter Janke and his wife Lalita. May God bless them for all their charitable work. And yet Peru is probably not in our political leaders’ list of favorite immigrant sources.

Immigration has been controversial throughout our history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, newspapers described Irish immigrants as unemployable drunkards. Italians with their tanned skins from the bright Italian sun were sent to ghettos to live with the Mexicans.

Today, when immigration is the issue, deportation is preferred to segregation.

Among those facing such fate are the so-called “Dreamers” -- children who for all intent and purposes consider our country their country.
