Police detain man for wrongful confinement of girlfriend

SIBU: The police have detained a man who was alleged to have wrongfully confined and criminally intimidated his girlfriend at a rented room in Jalan Empelam here for over a week.

The suspect was picked up at about 1.30am, less than 12 hours after the 23-year-old woman managed to escape and lodged a police report.

Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said initial investigations revealed the 30-year-old man had confined his girlfriend since Jan 15, and demanded for money from the victim's family.

"The complainant believes her boyfriend was under the influence of drugs," he said, adding that the victim also claimed to have been beaten up and kicked by the suspect and had sought treatment at the Sibu Hospital.
