Before we proceed to the details of the auction, here is a list of players who have been retained by their respective franchises, and the amount they have paid which will be deducted from their total purse of Rs 80 crore in the auction.

These aren’t the only players the sides will be able to retain, but they will also have a right to match card – maximum 3 per team, where they will have to match the highest bid by any other franchise for their for their former player to play for them again.
While all those teams that have retained three players will get two RTM cards, those who have retained two or one player will get three RTM cards.
CSK and RR are back in the IPL after a two-year ban. For these two teams, the players available for RTM will be the ones who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and were also part of Rising Pune Supergiants or Gujarat Lions squads in IPL 2017. Other guidelines for RTM during auction will remain same for them.
The original rule was that all players will be in the auction pool after three years. But this rule was changed in 2011 and teams were allowed retain four players with a maximum of three Indian players. Then, in 2014, a franchise was allowed to retain a maximum of 5 players. Out of these five players, a maximum of four capped Indians were allowed.
Again, the auction can be highly unpredictable as we have seen in the past. But big Indian names like Gambhir, Dhawan, Yuvraj and foreign stars like Stokes, Starc, Chris Lynn are expected to rake in the money as teams look to complete their squads.
