Cardiovascular disease is the cause of about 801,000 deaths in the United States, according to the American Heart Association (AHA.)

In fact, it’s the number one killer of all Americans.

AHA’s mission “is to create a world free of heart disease and stroke” and they do so by hosting community programs and fundraisers such as Jump Rope for Heart.

Jump Rope for Heart is a nationwide program that AHA started about 39 years ago to help teach students the importance of heart health as well as to collect donations for research.

Several San Antonio area elementary schools participate in the program, including Navarro Elementary.

Through the program the students have the opportunity to learn how to live healthy lives by drinking more water, eating more veggies and staying active.

Additionally, they also are sharing AHA’s mission to their friends and family, while collecting donations for research

Last year, Navarro Elementary raised $10,500 and hope to raise $11,000 for this year’s program.

With the community’s help, they can reach this goal.

Organizations like AHA not only teach students as young as in kindergarten about these issues, what they can do at an early age to prevent them and how they can help others.

Our Voice is the opinion of the Seguin Gazette editorial board.
