Roger Federer makes stunning Rafael Nadal confession after beating Marton Fucsovics

ROGER FEDERER has admitted he planned to play doubles with Rafael Nadal roughly 10 years before they teamed up at last year’s inaugural Laver Cup.

Federer was speaking moments after dispatching Marton Fucsovics in straight sets to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

And with the match being played in the Rod Laver Arena, Federer was asked about his own dedication to the tennis legend - The Laver Cup.

Federer’s management company, TEAM8, Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia all helped put together the tournament last year.

And it was the first time ever fans got to see both Federer and Nadal feature on the same side of the net.

However, Federer has admitted the two could have teamed up much sooner in their careers.

“It was very special because we talked about playing doubles 10 years ago,” Federer said.

“I didn’t know I was going to make him wait for 10 years.

“But it was very much worthwhile, just being on the same side of the court as Rafa was  very special.

“Just seeing his thought process, the championship mentality that he has and the intensity was very enjoyable to be honest.

“Seeing how he tried to figure things out against a great doubles team in Sam Querrey and Jack Sock so it was great fun.”

“Not just being on the same side of the net with him but also with the whole team.”
