Sioux Falls School District Stepping Up To Help Curb Distracted Driving

Erika Tordsen reports:
South Dakota is one of only 8 states that allows 14-year-olds to drive.

That has the Sioux Falls School District and city police stepping up to combat distracted driving.

15-year-old Ramsey Folkerts is one of hundreds of students who are new to driving in the Sioux Falls School District.

She says she always tries to focus on the road... rather than her phone.

"I still have my alerts on and I do have a little stand on my car that I can see my phone but I never text when I drive," said Folkerts.

But some young drivers aren't as focused.

"Distracted driving is really a problem not only in Sioux Falls but across the country and we wanted to emphasize that concern and do some more education with that," said DeeAnn Konrad, Community Relations Supervisor.

That's why the district is teaming up with Sioux Falls Police to send an important message.

Soon you'll see billboards, videos and social media posts with law enforcement, reminding you to keep your eyes on the road.

School Resource Officer Jason Leach says when the school district asked police to help they got on board.

"Our officers were able to go into a little more depth and explain to the students the importance from the experiences they've had on the calls they've responded to, the bad accidents they responded to," said Leach.

Distracted driving doesn't just mean texting while driving... it's putting on makeup or reaching back to grab a book from the back seat.

District officials hope the message has more meaning, coming from an officer.

"It's kind of that gut check for them and bring the reality forward from real life experiences that they had and trying to instill that upon them," said Leach.

The videos are posted on the Sioux Falls School District's Youtube page.
