The best bits from BBC quiz show Pointless
Richard admitted the idea for Pointless, a popular BBC quiz show, came from a Channel 4 television series he worked on.
The 47-year-old revealed that Pointless was inspired by the game show Beat the Nation, which first appeared on screen in 2004.
He told Radio Times: “We took an idea we’d nicked off another show we’d done called Beat the Nation where we asked 100 people the questions.
“We were trying out ideas and someone came up with the name Pointless. Weird though it sounds, that’s when it all crystallised.

"You’d see notes in your diary saying 'Pointless meeting' and think, 'If we’re enjoying it, there must be something to it.'"
Now, Pointless which launched in 2009 is in its 18th series and last year celebrated its 1,000 episode.
The success of the hit BBC show has largely been credited to its hosts Alexander Armstrong and Richard, who first meant while at university.
Both Alexander and Richard studied at Cambridge University but admitted they were not friends at the time.
Alexander said: "We knew of each other more than we knew each other - same college, but we ran with different crowds… By the time we left we were quite good friends."

Despite only becoming friends later on in life, Richard let slip that he had always known they would work together in the future.
“We’d bump into each other in TV studios and have a gossip. I always knew at some point that we’d work together,” Richard added.
Asked if working together has changed their friendship at all, Alexander explained that it had, in fact, made their relationship “stronger”.
The pair has become known for talking over one another and pausing in between chats during the quiz show.
