Djokovic, 30, crashed out the Australian Open in straight sets at the hands of Hyeon Chung today.
Chung hit more winners - 54 to 36 - made less unforced errors - 37 to 57 - and outserved Djokovic despite previously never going beyond the second round of a Slam.
Djokovic, meanwhile, has 12 Grand Slam wins to his name but has been suffering with elbow and back problems.
McEnroe sent a get-well message to the Serb while commentating - then appeared to suggest he could retire in five year at the age of 35.
While working for Eurosport, McEnroe said: "Novak, please get healthy and we'll enjoy watching you for the next five years on the tour."

For 21-year-old Chung, meanwhile, there was nothing but praise from the tennis legend
After Chung spoke Korean on court, McEnroe said: "I'm sure there were a lot of joy in those words.
"There's people going crazy not only in South Korea, but in the tennis world, to see this young man do what he did today.
"You talk about a breath of fresh air. We needed it, we got it, and we've got to be pumped for it."
