1. 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle'
$20 million ($316.9 million)
In this sequel-slash-remake of 1995’s “Jumanji,” four teenagers are sucked into a video game and take on swashbuckling avatars played by Hollywood stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. Basically, it’s all motorcycle chases, CGI monsters and shticky comedy, with a few half-hearted efforts at character development and plot twists that will all be easily forgotten tomorrow. In other words, it’s Hollywood formula at its most generic.
REVIEW: 'Jumanji' sequel is the best movie about a fake video game since ... 'Tron'
Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas star in 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,' the story of video-game heroes stuck in a real game.
2. '12 Strong'
$16.5 million (first week)
Chris Hemsworth plays the leader of the first group of U.S. soldiers to invade Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. It's a terrific story, but gives the impression the war, which continues, was won quickly.

The first trailer for '12 Strong,' starring Chris Hemsworth, the true story of Green Berets who ride into battle in Afghanistan after 9/11 on horses.
3. 'Den of Thieves'
$15.3 million (first week)
A rough-and-tumble cop (Gerard Butler) and a brooding bank robber (Pablo Schreiber) square off in a tense heist caper set in Los Angeles. A fun, hard-boiled yarn that owes a lot to Michael Mann’s “Heat.”
