Says loss of revenue can be offset

PMK leader S. Ramadoss on Sunday slammed Tamil Nadu government’s move to open 1,000 Tasmac outlets and plans for door delivery of liqour from ‘Elite’ shops through an app.

In a statement, he said that the government thinks money earned through liquor shops is the only way to boost the revenues.

“Liqour sales are the reason for all the problems in the State. It [sale of liquor] might increase revenue by a few 1,000 crores. But that is not the solution for the problems plaguing the State,” Mr. Ramadoss said.

He urged the government to implement full prohibition. Though the State might lose revenues to the tune of ₹30,000 crore, it could set off the losses by boosting human capital and productivity.

Even if the State’s overall productivity increased by 2%, it would increase revenue by at least ₹3 lakh crore and boost job opportunities, Mr. Ramadoss said.

He also said the State had not reached its revenue target for the last seven years since 2011.
