The Government is preparing to enact a minimum wages Act for teachers in private unaided schools, Governor P. Sathasivam said in his address to the Assembly on Monday.

Underlining the priority of the Government to strengthen the education system, he stressed the need to attract the best minds to the teaching profession. The Government, he said, planned to improve the quality of general education by providing better infrastructure, encouraging the use of technology in classrooms and emphasising academic excellence.

A comprehensive e-governance mechanism in the General Education department and digitisation of school libraries would be major initiatives in this direction. The upgradation of universities, government arts and science colleges, engineering colleges and polytechnics would be completed this year.

The Governor announced the establishment of interdisciplinary research centres in government engineering colleges and other institutions. As a pilot project, the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram had started work on a student satellite.

Mr. Sathasivam said moves were afoot to develop the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (IIITMK) into a research-cum-learning institution for emerging technologies.
