Revealed: Harry and Meghan Markle will NOT invite 'good friend' Obama to Royal Wedding

HARRY and Meghan Markle will not be inviting Barack Obama to their Royal Wedding later this year, sources have revealed, despite the former president being a ‘close friend’ of the prince.

While the Royal Wedding guest list has not been officially been confirmed by Kensington Palace, speculation has been rife about whether the former US President would be invited.

The pair have attended a long list of public engagements together since they first met at the Oval Office back in October 2015.

Prince Harry made an appearance at former US President’s first Obama Foundation Summit last year, and Obama was spotted at Harry’s Invictus Games.

As the pair watched the games from the sidelines, Obama was said to have been comfortable enough to quiz the 33-year-old over his blossoming romance with Meghan Markle.

But sources have now revealed that Harry will not invite Obama to avoid what may be seen as a snub to Donald Trump who is not a ‘friend’.

A source said: “President Trump will not be invited because the wedding will be for friends and family only.

“It won't be a state occasion. If Mr Obama was invited, the invitation could look like a snub to Mr Trump, and His Royal Highness would not wish to cause a diplomatic row.”

Harry and Meghan Markle were earlier urged not to invite Obama as Government officials were worried Trump, a staunch critic of his predecessor, could take offence if he is not invited as well.

A Whitehall source said: "Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it's causing a lot of nervousness.

"Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a Royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen.

"Conversations are ongoing about and ministers will eventually have to decide.

"If the Prime Minister lays down the law, Harry will just have to suck it up."

However, publicly the prince has continued to remain tight-lipped on whether Obama will be invited.

Asked whether he would invite Mr Obama to the wedding, the prince told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I don't know about that.

"We haven't put the invites or the guest list together, so who knows whether he's going to be invited or not. Wouldn't want to ruin that surprise."

The news comes after Donald Trump cancelled his planned visit to the UK next month to open the new £750million US embassy.

However, a senior source suggested Trump called off the visit as he was unhappy about the arrangements and scale of the visit.

The US President is not due to meet the Queen until a full state visit at a later date.

An exclusive poll for the Sunday Express revealed that Trump needs not expect a warm welcome when he comes to Britain with fewer than one in three believing a state visit should go ahead.
