Committee meets to discuss future of 3 NC Confederate monuments

Raleigh, N.C. — A new committee met for the first time on Monday to discuss three Confederate monuments currently on State Capitol grounds.

The Historical Commission's Confederate Monuments Committee has agreed to seek legal input on what action to take concerning the monuments.

During the conference call, committee members passed a motion to seek the opinion of the Civil War and Reconstructions Museum in Fayetteville, and to hold at least one public hearing.

The committee chair acknowledged that people in North Carolina want to see a solution.

"This monuments issue is obviously not an ordinary or routine task before us," said David Ruffin, committee chair. "Within the past week, I've had friends and professional acquaintances from all points of the political spectrum share a similar concern with me that in our work we find a solution that avoids contribution to anymore greatly toxic dialogue to transient positions in the public square."

The committee expects to present findings by April.
