GREENWOOD, Ind. (WXIN/CNN) – A man with terminal cancer is facing an eviction after falling behind on rent.
A few months ago, Mervin Haley started having trouble paying rent to Center Grove Estates in Greenwood, Indiana. He received financial assistance from a local agency, but the money did not cover the total amount he owed each month.
His family said they also reached out to the property manager to set up a partial payment arrangement.
“Come first of January, I went to pay it,” said Denise Haley, his ex-wife and caretaker. “They said they couldn’t accept a partial payment. They had to have the full amount.”
A judge ordered Mervin to vacate the property by Sunday at 6 p.m., during a court hearing last week. If he fails to do so, the sheriff’s department could remove his belongings on Monday.
“There’s no way that man can possibly be out of the house by then,” said Denise. “If he goes outside he’s going to get pneumonia, and that’s going to end him right there.”
Mervin is battling Stage 4 lung cancer, and doctors said he may only three months to live.
Following the eviction order, Denise wrote a letter to the judge to explain Mervin’s medical condition and asked for an extension to pay off the debt.
She also submitted a request to set up another payment arrangement with the property management company, which has yet to be approved.
"It’s got to be hard on him worrying about his life and then worrying about this on top of it," Denise said of her ex-husband.
