Acting on a tip that Cody A. Heskett, 26, wanted on a warrant, was staying at a South 10th Street residence, Cambridge Police officers responded to the location on Saturday night.
When they arrived at 11:11 p.m., a male and female who emerged from the residence indicated that Heskett was inside.
At that point, officers entered the residence to arrest Heskett.
Inside, they encountered two males and a female. While clearing the residence of people, they noticed a handgun inside a bedroom with an external hammer in the cocked position. Upon seeing the handgun, they ordered the three people to the ground. Officers then continued efforts to clear the residence, but found no other people.
Heskett was not among those who had been instructed to exit the house.
Officers found an open attic access and believed he may have entered the attic to hide. However, he did not respond to commands ordering him to exit his hiding location. Officers then contacted the dispatcher to ask that a police search dog be brought to the house.
While awaiting the dispatcher’s efforts to locate a K-9 unit, officers noticed movement between a bed and a wall of the residence.
They ordered the person or persons behind the bed to stop moving and to show their hands. The person behind the bed was Heskett. He came out from the hiding spot and they placed him in handcuffs.
Officers checked the hiding area to determine whether anyone else was hiding with him. When they did, they found several syringes and a spoon with a residue of an unknown substance.
Heskett was taken into custody and transported to the Guernsey County Jail for his active warrant. He also was charged with obstructing official business.
Because of the drug abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia found in the residence, the firearm that was inside was confiscated.
Officers said the 9mm handgun had a loaded magazine but did not have a cartridge in the chamber.
