Chiefs showing championship mentality - Katsande

2018-01-22 10:22

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande is optimistic that Amakhosi's recent come-from-behind wins show they've got the character to challenge for the title.

The Glamour Boys recovered from going a goal down two weekends ago to beat Polokwane City 2-1 and repeated that on Sunday with a 2-1 victory away to Baroka FC, which saw new signing Leonardo Castro netting the winner on his debut.

Chiefs are now third on the table, five points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and Katsande is hopeful that the manner of the recent victories suggests the Soweto side are up for the challenge.

"We knew that it was going to be a tough game. One of my [former] coaches once told me that it takes a second to concede a goal," he said after the Bakgaga match on Sunday.

"Once we scored we knew that they were going to be over confident. Us as professionals playing for a big team like Kaizer Chiefs, we knew that if we took the game to them we were going to get something.

"We were also trying to turn the tables because they said we have never won against Baroka.

"I think this might be the turning point also after coming back from a goal down in two consecutive matches it means this is a championship mentality and performance.

"I think credit must go to everyone in defence, they were amazing. We just need to build on this performance going forward."

The Zimbabwe international also paid tribute to the impressive form Amakhosi's young players have shown this season.

"The kids that we have now are exciting, they have purpose. Us as senior players we're trying to guide them and make them taste how it feels to win something with a big team like Kaizer Chiefs."

Chiefs next face one of their toughest challenges of the season when they welcome title favourites Mamelodi Sundowns to the FNB Stadium in an Absa Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
