Taiwan Lantern Festival Beckons Tykes!

This year sees the 29th Taiwan Lantern Festival which takes place from 2nd – 11th March 2018 in the culturally rich historic city of Chiayi close to the mountain landscapes of Alishan National Park.

Set in different locations across the island each year, the large, carnival-style celebration is based on Taiwanese cultural traditions and is famous for the many colourful and beautifully designed lanterns on display representing traditional local culture.



Adding to the festive atmosphere are spectacular light, dance and music shows as well as delicious Taiwanese street food. Growing bigger and more extravagant each year, the Lantern Festival now lasts 9 days and has been hailed by international media as ‘a Disneyland without roller coasters’ and ‘one of the best festivals in the world’.



The 2018 Taiwan Lantern Festival will use technology, artistry and cultural elements to create spectacular shows that will convey Chiayi’s rich history, unique culture and beautiful landscapes. Local highlights that will be depicted include the historic Alishan Forest Railway journey which transports passengers from Chiayi to watch the sunrise over Alishan’s mountain peaks, the famous cherry blossom season which flowers each spring, the remarkable architecture of the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, and the traditional arts and crafts of local artists.


The shows will take place at set times every evening for the duration of the festival and be accompanied by performances from professional dancers, before closing with an impressive firework display.
