Homeless man charged with stealing cash drawer from Smokers Haven in Laconia

LACONIA -- A homeless man was arrested for the robbery of a Union Avenue smoke shop Sunday night.
Police said they responded to Smokers Haven at 245 Union Ave., at 8:49 p.m., for the reported robbery, according to a press release.
A store employee said a man walked into the store and took the cash drawer, according to police.
Police said the man was identified as John P. McCarthy, 34.
McCarthy was found at 79A Summer St. and arrested on a charged of unarmed robbery, police said. They added that McCarthy had an outstanding warrant from the Gilford Police Department for disobeying an officer.
McCarthy refused bail and will appear before a judge today at 1 p.m. in Belknap Superior Court.
