Nadal toughs one out to reach quarterfinals

MELBOURNE, Australia — Rafael Nadal took almost four hours but advanced to his 10th Australian Open quarterfinal on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 win over Diego Schwartzman. Nadal will next play sixth-seeded Marin Cilic, who collected his 100th Grand Slam match win with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (0), 7-6 (3) victory over No. 10 Pablo Carreno Busta.

Kyle Edmund reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by defeating Andreas Seppi 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2, 6-3. Seppi, 33, has now played 52 majors without reaching the quarterfinals — he has lost in the fourth round five times. Grigor Dimitrov beat Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4).

Madison Keys advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over eighth-seeded Caroline Garcia. Angelique Kerber extended her winning streak to 13 matches with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Hsieh Su-wei. Tomas Berdych also advanced.
