There has been a steady increase in the inflow of Krishna water at the Poondi reservoir in the past few days.
Following a request from the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department to increase supply, Andhra Pradesh had recently agreed to release 3,330 mcft of water from the Krishna to meet the drinking water requirement of Chennai. On Sunday, the discharge from the Kandaleru reservoir upstream was stepped up to 2,250 cusecs from 2,000 cusecs.
Prime storage point
The volume realised at the Poondi reservoir, which is the prime storage point, increased to about 320 cusecs. One cusec of water is equal to 28.3 litres per second. Tamil Nadu has, since January 1, received 411 million cubic feet of Krishna water, which is nearly a fortnight’s requirement. Officials of the WRD expect the volume to be stepped up further and continue till April.
The increase will provide a boost to the storage in the four reservoirs supplying water to Chennai.
