Demand for energy increasing due to fast urbanization: Expert

Belagavi: There is a need to create awareness on the efficient use of energy, particularly in construction activities, opined N K Payannavar, deputy general manager (Hubballi regional centre), Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd.
The campaign is necessitated as in the past three years, the demand for energy has increased in the country due to fast urbanization, he said, speaking after inaugurating the two-day event "Capacity Building Training on Energy Conservation Building Code" organized by Visvesvaraya Technological University at Jnana Sangama Campus here on Monday. The event is being organized in association with Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. He said that energy conservation should be included in the engineering curriculum.
Anand Shivapur, coordinator, VTU Centre for PG Studies, in his presidential address, said that everybody should adopt energy-efficient methods. "We are wasting 40% to 50% of energy. Hence, engineers have the responsibility to develop sophisticated methods of energy conservation," he said.
Shivapur also advocated the use of solar energy.
Prof Rashmi Yehuda and Syed M Ali were the resource persons. Rohan Gurav and Chandrashekar, assistant professors of VTU, coordinated the programme.
