STATE OF THE ARTS: Cultural offerings fuel an economic engine

With camping, stunning views, live music and more, Mountain Jam annually draws thousands to the heart of the Catskill Mountains. This gathering also underscores the region’s rich artistic heritage and growing reputation as a destination for music festival devotees.

The Clearwater Festival will be held that same weekend, on June 16-17, in Westchester County; and KFEST, annually held in June, is set to return this year to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Sullivan County.

Mountain Jam in past years has hosted Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers; Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin; Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead; the Avett Brothers; the Black Keys; Gov’t Mule; and Levon Helm. Mountain Jam has also welcomed Lucius, Lake Street Dive and Coheed & Cambria.

The first Mountain Jam was held in 2005 and was launched as a one-day celebration of the 25th anniversary of Ulster County-based Radio Woodstock (WDST/100.1 FM). The gathering is now a collaboration between Radio Woodstock (WDST/100.1 FM) owner Gary Chetkof's Chet-5 Festivals company and Townsquare Media, which owns a cluster of radio stations in Dutchess County.
